My Eclectic Ancestor, Mordechai Manuel Noah

I recently received this medal from the Jewish American Hall of Fame, honoring my eclectic ancestor, Mordechai Manuel Noah. Among other exploits, he served as the Sheriff of New York in the 1820s. In 1825 he invited the Jews from around the world (including the Cherokee Indians, whom he believed to descend from the lost Ten Tribes of Israel) to settle on a tract of land he and his backers had purchased near Niagara Falls and which he called "Ararat". He intended thereby to establish a Jewish homeland on American soil as a preparatory stage to their messianic restoration in Zion. The attempt - albeit unsuccessful - earned him acknowledgement as a precursor of modern political Zionism - and a street named after him in Jerusalem.
